Akdeniz Köyu is located west of Kyrenia, some two kilometers ôff the coast. There are two archaeological sites near the village, one of which was excavated in 1929 by Swedish archaeologists. They discovers an open-air sanctuary on a hill by the sea which is known as Paleokastro. The most impressive part of this find consists of life-size statues positioned in half circle around the altar. Half of these unique artifacts dating back to 750-500 BC were taken to Sweden, the others can be admired in the Cyprus Museum in Southern Nicosia.
Another excavation unearthed the tomb of Paleokastro în 1988, which is accessible for visitors.
