The Agios Ioannis church is situated within the only publicly accessible part of Famagusta's "ghost town" destrict. The 1960 edifice was left to decay like all of Varosha, after its residents' expulsion in 1974. In 1994, Agios Ioannis church was opened after renovation as an icon museum, with some 120 oeuvers on display, largely from the 20th Century.
The museum's actual opening hours rather mysterious. But even if you find it locked, the rare impressions of uninhabited city space along the walk from the territory's gate towards the church, are definetely worth the while.
